Biodynamic Wineries in the UK
A straw-bale winery in Wales. A vineyard on the edge of Bristol. London's only commercial vines. Here is where the country's biodynamic wine actually comes from.
The first time someone told me there was a biodynamic vineyard in north London I assumed they meant a window box. There isn't. There's a proper one, ten acres of vines in Enfield, farmed without synthetic anything and run as a mental health charity. That's when it clicked for me that the UK biodynamic scene is bigger and stranger and more interesting than the tasting menus let on.
There are still only a handful of producers. The country has somewhere around seven Demeter-certified vineyards, depending on the year and who you ask, plus a small group of others working biodynamically without the certification. Compared to France's 250-plus, that is tiny. But the people doing it here are doing it with conviction, and a few of them are making wine you will want to drink even if you don't care at all about the moon.
First, what biodynamic actually means
Biodynamic farming is organic plus. No synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers, same as organic. But it goes further: the vineyard is treated as a single living organism, the work is timed to the lunar calendar, and the winemaker uses a set of preparations made from things like cow horns, yarrow and chamomile to feed the soil. Demeter is the certifying body, and the standards are strict.
Sounds strange. Tastes real. The wines tend to be more expressive, more site-specific, and made with less intervention in the cellar. They are also harder to make in a country where it rains a lot and the grapes get nervous.

The producers
Sedlescombe Organic Vineyard
East Sussex
The grandparent of the lot. Roy Cook planted Sedlescombe in 1979 and released the UK's first certified biodynamic wine in 2010, which is later than you'd think. The estate sits in a sloping pocket of the High Weald, and the range now runs through whites, rosé, reds and traditional-method sparkling. The vineyard walks are open most of the year, which is the easiest way in if you want to see how it all works.
Albury Estate Vineyard
Surrey
Tucked into the slope above the Silent Pool, a real spring-fed lake that is exactly as moody as it sounds, Albury makes serious traditional-method sparkling on chalk. Their Wild Ferment Blanc de Blancs is the one to track down: pure Chardonnay, no commercial yeast, just whatever was already living on the grape skins. The result is more textured and more nervy than most English fizz, and it pairs the precision of the place with something a little wilder.
Ancre Hill Estates
Monmouthshire, Wales
Probably the most interesting biodynamic estate in the UK right now, and the only one in Wales. Richard and Joy Morris planted vines on the slopes above Monmouth in 2006 and went fully Demeter in 2014. The winery is built from straw bales with a living roof. They make Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Albariño, and an orange wine that has a small cult following. If you only try one producer from this list, make it this one.
Oxney Organic Estate
East Sussex
Tucked into a quiet corner of the Sussex-Kent border near Rye, Oxney is the largest single-estate organic vineyard in the UK. They follow biodynamic practices alongside the organic certification, and the still rosé made from Pinot Précoce is a small, perfect thing. You can also stay on the estate in a Jacobean house or a shepherd's hut, which is the kind of detail that puts a vineyard on a long weekend list.
Tillingham
East Sussex
Ben Walgate's project on a hillside above Rye is what happens when you combine a working biodynamic vineyard, a winery in a converted hop barn, a restaurant doing live-fire cooking, and a boutique hotel. The wines are made with minimal intervention and they are not shy. Pet Nats, qvevri-aged whites, skin-contact pours. If you can get a room and stay the night, do.
Limeburn Hill Vineyard
Somerset
The only biodynamic vineyard in the south-west of England, on a south-facing slope just outside Bristol. Robin Snowdon planted three thousand vines by hand, three reds and five whites, and makes natural wines and spirits at small scale. Visits are by appointment and worth the drive. The wines are honest, alive, and clearly the product of someone who is doing this for the right reasons.
Davenport Vineyards
East Sussex & Kent
Will Davenport was one of the first to convert to organic in the UK, back in 2000, and the vineyards in Rotherfield and Horsmonden have been farmed using biodynamic practices for years even though the label says organic. The Horsmonden Dry White is the calling card: a blend of Bacchus, Ortega, Faber, Siegerrebe and Huxelrebe that tastes like an English summer if it were a glass of wine.
Forty Hall Vineyard
Enfield, London
The reason this whole post exists. The first commercial vineyard inside London since the Middle Ages, ten acres in Enfield, biodynamic and organic methods, traditional-method fizz and still wines from Ortega and Bacchus. It is run as a social enterprise and the wine sales fund a mental health and wellbeing project for local residents. Buying a bottle here actually does something.
The UK biodynamic scene is small, scrappy, and quietly more interesting than its size suggests.
How to taste your way through
If you want to drink the whole list, the most efficient route is a weekend in East Sussex. Sedlescombe, Oxney, Tillingham, and Davenport are all within an hour of each other. Albury makes a good day trip from London. Forty Hall is on the Piccadilly line. Ancre Hill and Limeburn Hill take a proper drive but reward you with the two most committed biodynamic producers in the country.
And if you can't get out to any of them, a few good London wine shops carry these bottles. Look at Borough Wines, Highbury Vintners, and Top Cuvée. Ask for the English biodynamic shelf. They will know what you mean.
